Manchester United’s Paul Pogba played for France on Thursday night as the country beat Italy 3-1. The game was played in Bari in the south of Italy, and the atmosphere at the Stadio San Nicola certainly wasn’t friendly toward the visiting team.
France’s national anthem was booed and whistled, which led to Italy’s captain Gianluigi Buffon showing he disagreed with sections of the stadium, and applauding as the music played out, an act followed by other fans in the stadium.
Singled out for particular grief was Pogba, with French newspaper L’Equipe believing it’s because of the way he left Juventus this summer. The Turin club have fans throughout the country and it’s not thought to be simply that he left Juve, but the surrounding media circus which he played a big part in.
It was never likely to have gone down well and Pogba now knows that he’s left behind some bad taste in Italy.
