Despite an initial tough first season at Manchester United, there’s no denying that Raphaël Varane’s signing has been a success.

Erik ten Hag has heavily relied on the centre-back since taking over at Old Trafford, pairing him alongside Lisandro Martínez more often than not, and with him retiring from international football at just 29, he will spend more time focusing on club football.

Ahead of France playing the Netherlands, GQ in France sat down with the Manchester United defender to talk about his career, past, present and future, where they asked him about what comes next for him.

The big question was whether or not he would sign for another club or if he would retire with the Red Devils, with whom he has a contract until 2025.

Saying that was a ‘serious option’, he added: “I will finish my career either at Real Madrid, Manchester United or at Lens. It’s sure that I won’t do another club, but Madrid, it seems complicated. You don’t tend to go back generally. The most likely is that I end in Manchester or Lens.”

Having played football since the age of seven, the defender is obviously apprehensive about ending his career, but knows it’s a decision he’ll have to make at some point.

Rest assured, Manchester United fans, he’s not thinking about it seriously just yet, but admits it has crossed his mind as he nears his 30th birthday.

This season, Varane has played 27 times in all competitions for the Red Devils.
