On Wednesday, Manchester United announced the new contract of Diogo Dalot.
Erik ten Hag decided to reward the fullback with a deal which runs until 2028, proving the club have big faith in what he can bring to them in the coming years.
Now as Portuguese newspaper O Jogo today writes about Dalot’s extension, they say Manchester United had other reasons to protect him with a long contract.
It’s claimed that the right-back had actually been drawing the interest from several clubs, and this new deal can help them ‘scare’ them away.
They say that Atlético Madrid, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Milan and Real Madrid were all already keeping an eye on him, and more recently, it’s Juventus who had him as a target to replace Juan Cuadrado.
Dalot’s contract with Manchester United was supposed to expire in 2024, following a one-year extension triggered by the club last year, and that would put the Red Devils in an uncomfortable situation next season in case other clubs came for him.
In an endless battle with Aaron Wan-Bissaka for the right-back position, the Portuguese player made 42 appearances for the Old Trafford side this season.
