As widely reported on Tuesday evening, Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was benched for Cameroon’s match against Gambia.
The 27-year-old had started against Senegal, but with the 3-1 defeat, he was sent back to the bench, with his cousin Fabrice Ondoa getting his place back.
Outlet Sports News Africa now shares some news on the situation involving the Manchester United goalkeeper, claiming he didn’t take the decision very well.
Sources told the website that Onana confronted Samuel Eto’o about the decision, and became quite angry during the discussion.
“It was Song who decided to change the goalkeepers and put Ondoa back as number one following a meeting with some of the team’s players who didn’t like Onana given the context. It was only this morning that he found out he wasn’t playing. He had a verbal altercation with Eto’o, but Eto’o didn’t reply, so Onana got got angry on his own before calming down and staying with the group to accept his fate.”
It now remains to be seen how Onana will react for the rest of the tournament, and if he’ll have any other chances to play.
The goalkeeper’s trip to Africa seemed like a great chance for him to get a break and prove himself for his country, while he’s still to convince he was the right choice for Manchester United.
However, as things stand, the Red Devils may still have to work on building up his confidence so he can show his best for the Old Trafford side.
