Since arriving at the club, Sergio Romero has always been Manchester United’s back-up option for David De Gea. Now that Dean Henderson was called back to the first team squad, that makes the Argentine player their third choice.
The goalkeeper’s wife has been speaking against the Red Devils on social media for not letting him leave this summer, and that left a tense mood since the end of the transfer window.
So other clubs are becoming interested in his signing, and one of them is his former side Racing. El Intransigente reports today that the Avellaneda club are already thinking of this possibility for next year.
It’s claimed that Racing have been growing a lot in the past couple of years, and bringing Romero back to the club would be the icing on the cake for them.
The outlet points out that Boca Juniors had tried to sign the player this summer, but he gave Manchester United his priority. But, ‘the situation is now totally different, since there’s a conflict between the parties’, so Racing would have a shot at this ‘great target’.
It’s claimed their idea would be to sign Romero as a free agent. That’s because his contract with the Red Devils expires in 2021, and that would leave his future in his own hands.
However, Manchester United still have an option to extend his deal for a further year. So perhaps the Argentine side would have to pay a transfer fee to get him, as well as affording his big wages.
