Manchester United picked up a convincing 3-0 win over Leicester City in the Premier League and as it stands, it will be the last game that Ruud van Nistelrooy manages at the club.
Rúben Amorim joins the club in the next few days and as he awaits a visa to start working at Old Trafford, Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt has given his views on the incoming boss and Van Nistelrooy’s time as the first-team manager.
The Dutchman spoke to ViaPlay after the win at Old Trafford yesterday and gave his views about the interim boss, as relayed by VI: “In my opinion, Ruud can definitely remain an assistant. I found him very pleasant in that role.”
When asked about Amorim and what he can do at United, De Ligt said: “I don’t know much about the new coach yet, but I do know that he did a good job at Sporting. With a new coach, it’s always a bit of a wait and see. You have to do your very best and remain yourself.”
Speaking about Manchester United’s recent run of form, De Ligt stated the club has a need for consistency under Amorim.
“Hopefully the team will get even better. We have to keep winning these kinds of matches: you can win and lose to anyone in the Premier League. You can see that again now with Tottenham against Ipswich.
“You have to be ready every week and I hope that the new coach will get the continuity and that we can play with confidence.”
De Ligt was signed by Erik ten Hag but it does seem as if he would be a regular under Amorim.
The centre-back is known for his ball-playing ability and Amorim’s system thrives on having players of that type.
As weeks go on, De Ligt’s prominence could increase and United’s form will depend heavily on how the new Portuguese boss adapts to the situation and the players at hand.
