When Manchester United agreed to let Donny van de Beek go to Eintracht Frankfurt on loan in January, they were likely hoping they had seen the last of him.
After all, the Dutch midfielder has done anything but impress since his transfer from Ajax Amsterdam, and even a loan to Everton couldn’t get things back on track.
That’s why there was optimism a move to Germany could fix matters, but Bild believe there is now little chance of him staying in Frankfurt, with a move back to Manchester United on the cards.
They rate all the January deals made by the Bundesliga side, including the loan of the Red Devils man, and give their verdict.
Bild open up with the question of whether the player will ever get his career back on track, and while the Germans knew he wouldn’t be arriving in tip-top shape, hopes were still high.
His manager, Dino Toppmöller has given him ‘several chances’, but the Manchester United loanee ‘didn’t capitalise on any of them’.
In fact, he isn’t even a backup any more, and has already missed four games, with results far more important for the team than getting Van de Beek back to fitness.
It’s explained that if things stay that way, Eintracht ‘will definitely not take up’ the €10m option to buy this summer, as the player has ‘disappointed across the board’.
Therefore, Erik ten Hag is going to have to deal with this in the next transfer window, which is what neither he, the clubs or the player will have wanted.
