Manchester United ‘intensifying contacts’ to sign defender – One in, out out idea at Old Trafford

Manchester United held talks with Barcelona over a deal for Frenkie de Jong, but the 25-year-old wasn’t keen to leave the Camp Nou.

Apart from De Jong, Memphis Depay and Sergiño Dest have also been linked to the Red Devils.

Reports in the UK have stated that Manchester United are looking to sign a right-back before the window closes.

Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are the two recognised players in that position. The latter’s future remains uncertain and he could help Erik ten Hag’s side make a new signing.

Sport state that in recent hours, the La Liga side and Manchester United are ‘intensifying contacts’ to ‘reach an agreement’ for a swap deal involving Wan-Bissaka and Dest.

The American is not included in Xavi Hernández’s plans, while Sergi Roberto has failed to convince his manager.

Barcelona have discussed some names to please Xavi, but their economic reality has made them look for a ‘pure exchange’ deal with the Premier League side involving Wan-Bissaka and Dest.

The former Crystal Palace man doesn’t fit into Ten Hag’s plans and the Dutchman would favour Dest’s arrival at the club. The duo have similar market values, according to the Catalan newspaper.

Sport state that several options are proposed and it includes a direct swap deal or through loan deals. This is what Barcelona are ‘debating’ with Manchester United.
