On October 6th, Sport reported Manchester United have made contact over signing Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen in the winter market.
The Germany international suffered a back injury in July and has been on the sidelines since then. His future at Barcelona remains uncertain.
Joan García has been the No.1 for Hansi Flick this season. He’s likely to start when Ter Stegen regains full fitness. The latter needs regular minutes to make it to the next World Cup.
El Desmarque states Manchester United could be an option for the 33-year-old in January.
Journalist David Ibáñez reports the stopper is handling “several offers”, including one from Manchester United. Ibáñez insists he’s been directly told about the Red Devils’ proposal.
“Beşiktaş’ offer is much more concrete, but everyone is waiting to see how he recovers,” he said.
“I suppose they’re waiting to see how he recovers, if he gets medical clearance, which, from what I’m told, if everything goes well, he’ll get at the beginning of January,”
“The teams that are interested will have to assess whether he’s recovered, whether he’s fit enough to make a move.”
Manchester United claims raise eyebrows
Ter Stegen seems to have accepted he won’t be able to get regular minutes with the La Liga winners. Therefore, Ibáñez claims he’s looking to leave Barcelona either on loan or a permanent transfer in January.
“He’s already decided that he needs to take a step, either a loan or terminating his contract,” Ibáñez explained.
“I’m certain that when the winter transfer window arrives, once he’s recovered, Ter Stegen will leave Barcelona.”
Summer signing Senne Lammens has impressed for Manchester United while Ter Stegen is now injured.
Manchester United making an offer for an injured player makes no sense. Regardless, the headline from Spain states the Red Devils ‘have already made an offer’ ahead of January.
