Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Afonso Moreira after the winger’s standout numbers for Olympique Lyonnais this season have turned him into one of the more talked-about young wide players in Europe.
The 21-year-old has delivered eight goals and 11 assists across the campaign. Those returns have played a key role in Lyon’s push towards Champions League qualification, with the club now sitting in a direct qualification spot for the first time since 2019/20.
Moreira’s impact has been steady rather than occasional. He continues to influence games both as a starter and from the bench, often making the difference in tight moments.
He only arrived from Sporting CP for €2m (£1.7m) at the start of the season. Since then, his development has been rapid. Lyon are already discussing a contract adjustment, even though his current deal runs until 2030. His salary remains one of the lowest in the squad, which no longer reflects his role.
Interest building across Europe
That rise has naturally attracted attention. According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Manchester United are one of the clubs to have already made checks on the player.
Sides from Serie A and the Bundesliga are also tracking his progress closely as they look for attacking reinforcements ahead of next season.
For United, the timing is relevant. The club are preparing for a summer of changes, especially in forward areas. Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee have all been linked with possible exits.
All three operate in roles similar to Moreira. Therefore, any departures could open both squad space and financial room for a move.
Sporting clause and rising valuation
Afonso Moreira’s emergence also brings benefits for Sporting CP. The Portuguese club secured 20% of any future profit when they sold him.
His market value is currently around €10m (£8.7m), representing a sharp increase from his initial fee. However, Lyon are expected to demand significantly more if they consider a sale in the short term.
A transfer worth €20m (£17.4m), for example, would generate around €3.6m (£3.1m) for Sporting. That clause ensures they remain invested in his trajectory.
What happens next
Afonso Moreira has shown he can operate in different tactical roles. Under manager Paulo Fonseca, he has even covered the entire flank in a back-three system.
His breakthrough has also been helped by injuries to players such as Malick Fofana and Ernest Nuamah. Still, he has taken that opportunity convincingly and made himself difficult to drop.
For Manchester United, the next step depends on outgoings and priorities. They are clearly assessing wide options, and Moreira has moved onto that list.
Lyon remain in control due to his long contract. If they secure Champions League football, their position will only strengthen.
Interest from England is expected to continue. The coming months will show whether this develops into a concrete move or stays at the level of scouting.
