Manchester United may be given a second shot at Atlético Madrid forward Matheus Cunha, with the Brazilian on the list of players the Spanish club could move on in January.
That’s according to Marca, who cover the player’s future today and Manchester United’s prior interest in signing him.
He is considered ‘one of the strongest options to make money’ in the current squad, with Atlético needing to raise funds following their failure to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages.
That’s left the Spanish side with a €30m hole in their finances that will need to be filled with a sale, particularly after a summer in which they were already running a €40m deficit.
Cunha has gone from being chosen as the number nine of the future to ‘looking for a way out’ of the Wanda Metropolitano and an ‘untenable situation’.
He had previously been considered ‘untouchable’ when Manchester United ‘asked for a price’ but is now one of those chosen to leave during a ‘turbulent’ January transfer window.
Selling him while he still has value in the market will be crucial, although there is an acceptance that it will be ‘impossible’ for them to get a club to pay his release clause.
What figure they will ask for remains to be seen but it’s likely they will try and recoup the €26m they paid Hertha Berlin for him.
