Manchester United

Manchester United’s need to sign a midfielder is well known, with the Red Devils reportedly pushing for Sandro Tonali’s signature.

Sport Witness have regularly covered the Italian media’s interest in the Newcastle United player. They have often pushed Juventus as a destination, even if the Old Lady never had the financial muscle for a deal.

Tonali’s agent Giuseppe Riso made it clear that he would be interested in staying in England. This further removed the possibility of the Italy international returning to the Serie A in the near future.

With Arsenal and Manchester City previously linked with Tonali, it is Manchester United who are moving forward with a move.

Magpies being forced into exit

TuttoJuve report on Newcastle United’s desperate need to make money in the summer. They qualified for Europe last year but still had to work on their accounts.

Things will be less comfortable this summer and a major sale is likely needed. Tonali is one of the contenders to leave, with Eddie Howe’s side demanding €100m to let him depart at the end of the campaign.

Manchester United have ‘already made their move’ for the 25-year-old, who is seen as a first-choice to improve their midfield. Tonali is seen as the perfect fit as a replacement for Casemiro but the Red Devils will have to pay around €100m.

Competition from Manchester City can be a threat, with Atalanta’s Ederson seen as an alternative.

Our take: Chase won’t be easy for Tonali

While Manchester United are in line for Champions League qualification, the chase for Tonali will be difficult. Clubs in England are increasingly alert to his situation, which will only help Newcastle United when raising their asking price.

Tonali’s entourage is pushing the idea of a summer transfer. There is every chance that Michael Carrick’s side could be getting used for that, especially as Manchester City and Arsenal have more of an Italian presence in their squad.

Moreover, Manchester United need multiple midfielders next season. That is why spending everything on one player might not be a great idea.
