Diego León has been the talk of the Manchester United rumour mill over the past 24 hours as claims came from South America of the Premier League being seriously interested in signing the 17-year-old.
Early this morning, we covered claims from South America which stated Manchester United were working on a deal to sign the player from Cerro Porteño.
Due to international transfer rules designed to protect minors, he wouldn’t be able to physically move to the English club until he turns 18 next April.
He’s already broken through at Cerro Porteño and made 21 appearances this year, which will have brought attention in itself given his young age and a increased Premier League eagerness to sign young players from South America.
Whilst work permits when buying players from South America have become easier due to post-Brexit rules agreed by the English FA, that is still a hurdle to jump.
Now, Pedro Torres, a journalist in Paraguay, reports the deal is agreed.
Torres says León ‘will join’ Manchester United in 2025. The groundwork for the deal has been done and he presents it as a sure thing.
Roberto Rojas, another journalist who specialises in Paraguayan football, backs the whole thing up: ‘Can confirm left-back Diego León will officially join Manchester United in June 2025, once he turns 18, for a transfer fee of around $6m. León will play at Cerro Porteño for 6 more months before becoming the first ever Paraguayan to play for the Red Devils.’
Diego León will obviously take some time to be ready for Manchester United but should the deal go through he’ll be part of Ruben Amorim’s long term plans at Manchester United.
