Manchester United ‘absolutely’ still want to sign Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong and he’s now changed his mind on a potential move.
That’s according to Sport, who cover journalist Lluís Canut on TV3’s ‘Onze’ program and him revealing that De Jong is now open to a move from Camp Nou this summer.
They explain that the midfielder’s future is once again up in the air, and he is no long closing the door to an exit in the summer transfer window if there is an offer.
That door has been opening because there has been no progress in talks over a renewal of his deal and Manchester United are ‘very attentive’ to the situation.
They would be willing to bid for the midfielder if he’s available and ‘absolutely’ still want to sign him for Erik ten Hag, who is a big fan of the player following their time together at Ajax. Indeed, he tried to sign him throughout his first summer at Old Trafford and again last year.
He’d be delighted to get him at the third time of asking and De Jong, who previously turned down the move to Old Trafford, could now be open to it.
The situation depends on whether he can agree a new deal with Barcelona or not, with them trying to renew his deal to 2029 so they can spread out sums owed to the player after he deferred wages during the COVID-19 pandemic.
They’ve been unsuccessful, though, and coupled with a need to sell one of the big names this summer, a sale to Manchester United could now be welcomed.
