Pep Guardiola has called Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz personally to try and convince him of a move to Manchester City.
That’s according to the Bayern Insider podcast, who report that the Leverkusen star is still focused on joining Bayern Munich.
Wirtz is looking increasingly likely to leave Leverkusen this summer, with a report this week stating he’s already in talks with Bayern about a move. In fact, that report stated he’s told Xabi Alonso he only wants to join Bayern and isn’t interested in Manchester City or Real Madrid.
That has been disputed by Alonso today in his press conference, but reports about a move continue to swirl around Wirtz.
Now the Bayern Insider podcast provide their details and journalist Christian Falk insists Guardiola is playing his part for Manchester City.
“I even heard that Real hasn’t even inquired about him yet,” he said.
“I think Manchester City are trying with more zeal and determination than Real. Pep is even said to have called himself. Florian is apparently very impressed, but he’s still leaning toward Bayern.
“The Bayern leaning, verbal commitment, we’ve already reported on it, he wants to go to Bayern, that looks very good, but of course we always have to deal with the question of how it will be financed, and Bayern also have an idea.”
Now, we’d take this all with a massive pinch of salt as it’s hard to see Manchester City being this invested in a move for Wirtz given the indications he’s given them so far. He’s yet to show any sort of interest in a move to the Etihad.
Reports about them all feel like Manchester City’s name being used to push along Bayern, who are yet to show any desire to pay the massive sums Leverkusen will want for him.
