Ilkay Gündogan’s contract at Manchester City expires next June and there’s no clarity over his future at the Etihad.
Reports in Spain have pushed forward Barcelona as a candidate to sign the midfielder. Three days ago, Sky Deutschland stated the 32-year-old has two options ahead of him; either to sign a new deal with the Premier League winners or move to the Camp Nou.
Earlier in his career, the Germany international spent two seasons [between 2009 and 2011] at FC Nürnberg under the orders of Dieter Hecking.
The latter is currently the sporting director of the German club and has publicly asked the Manchester City star to return to Nürnberg. Pep Guardiola’s man appeared as a guest on Bild’s podcast, Phrasenmäher, and responded to his former manager’s request.
“To be honest, it will still be a bit difficult next year, but I can definitely imagine returning to FC Nürnberg one day – in whatever capacity. I associate the club and the city with incredibly great people and moments,” Gündogan said.
What is clear from Gündogan’s comments is that he won’t be returning to Nürnberg after this season.
Gündogan has managed two goals and two assists from 20 matches in all competitions this season for the Citizens.
