Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has said Manchester City star Rodri’s fitness will be assessed before the clash against Switzerland.
La Roja will take on Serbia later today, before travelling to Geneva to face Switzerland on September 8th.
In his pre-match press conference, De La Fuente was asked about the Manchester City player’s fitness. His comments are relayed by AS.
Rodri picked up an injury in Spain’s Euro 2024 final victory in July. This has forced him to miss the start of the season with Manchester City. Last weekend, Pep Guardiola included the midfielder in the squad against West Ham United, but he was an unused substitute.
There’s no clarity on whether the 28-year-old be involved against Serbia. On Wednesday, the Spain manager was asked about Rodri’s involvement against Switzerland.
Responding to that, he said: “Rodri is fine and was already called up for Manchester City’s last game. We will assess before the Geneva game whether he plays the entire game or just a little bit.”
Pep Guardiola would obviously prefer his player just sits and watches and is returned to the club in peak fitness.
Last season, Manchester City won the title and the FIFA Club World. They lost the FA Cup final to Manchester United. Rodri, who also had success with Spain in the summer, was an integral part of the Citizens squad.
De la Fuente is of the belief Rodri or Dani Carvajal should win the Ballon d’Or. The fullback won the league and Champions League with Real Madrid, and the Euros with Spain. The duo made it to the last 30, which was announced on Wednesday.
“I don’t know if three or two but, in my mind, Carvajal and Rodri should be two of the candidates for everything, for their background, for their journey, for their career, for their current status and for what they have achieved last season, that’s clear to me,” De La Fuente explained, relayed by Marca.
