Manchester City captain Ilkay Gündogan has revealed his secret WhatsApp conversation with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after last season’s title triumph.
Pep Guardiola’s side ended up as Premier League champions on the final day of last season courtesy of Gundogan, whose double against Aston Villa secured a remarkable turnaround and sent the title to the Etihad.
It was a Hollywood ending to what had become a tense title run in, with Liverpool clawing back a 12 point gap with a remarkable run in the second half of the season.
At one point on the final day of the season Liverpool had been top of the table and on course to end up as champions, with Manchester City trailing 2-0 to Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa.
However, Gündogan came off the bench to score twice and help secure a 3-2 victory, with 15 minutes of madness helping them to beat Liverpool to first place by a solitary point.
That’s something Klopp, who worked alongside Gündogan at Borussia Dortmund for several years, could have been bitter about but it seems their relationship remains intact.
“Kloppo wrote me at 9.26 pm: ‘Congratulations’ and a heart to go with it,” Gundogan told BILD regarding his ‘secret’ WhatsApp conversation with the Liverpool manager.
“I replied: ‘Thank you! You also for the great season and good luck for the Champions League final’ – and a heart too. There are some priorities and Kloppo is one of them.”
