When Portugal revealed the line-up which would play Switzerland in the World Cup round-of-16, nearly all the attention obviously went to Cristiano Ronaldo, as it was shocking to see such a star being sent to the bench.
But it turns out that manager Fernando Santos had replaced another player in the team, and that was Manchester City fullback, who apparently wasn’t very happy with the decision either.
Portuguese newspaper Record today features a story claiming the ‘sensation of injustice’ has been following Cancelo for a while now.
It’s claimed that the Manchester City player ‘believes he’s not properly valued’ by Fernando Santos, and that feeling started when the national team were still having the preparations for their trip to the World Cup.
Since Cancelo can start under Pep Guardiola on both sides of the pitch, he feels like he’s ‘misunderstood’ by the national team manager, who replaced him with Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot.
It’s even said he believes there’s an ‘external pressure’ for that decision.
According to Record, Cancelo’s teammates at Manchester City Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva have already spoken to him, trying to cheer him up, but whether that achieves anything…
