Manchester City defender Nathan Ake has revealed he’s been ignoring international teammates Denzel Dumfries and Stefan de Vrij ahead of the Champions League final.
The defender has been speaking to Algemeen Dagblad about this season so far and the upcoming clash with Inter Milan in Istanbul.
Manchester City head into that game as the favourites as they chase down a historic title following success in the Premier League and FA Cup this season.
The game will see Ake coming up against some familiar faces from the Netherlands squad in Denzel Dumfries and Stefan de Vrij, both of whom ha e been starring for Inter for several seasons.
That means things could be a little awkward later this month when the Manchester City and Inter Milan meet up as part of the Netherlands squad for the next international set of fixtures.
Ake accepts that will just have to be the case, though, revealing that he’s purposefully not spoken to the Inter Milan duo ahead of Saturday’s final.
“I think it’s great that Denzel Dumfries and Stefan de Vrij are also in the final,” he said.
“It’s nice to have three internationals of Oranje competing for the biggest prize of the season, isn’t it? ‘Dumpie’ covering the entire right side. Stefan who has been playing in Italy for so long.
“Except that soon at least one of us will come to Zeist grumpy for the Nations League final round. But yes, that’s football. That includes disappointment.
“I often have contact with Dumfries and De Vrij. And after the semi-finals, we also congratulated each other. In the run-up to such a final, you leave each other alone. We’ll see each other in the stadium.”
