Real Madrid are looking for a back-up to Marcelo, having lost patience with the fitness of Fabio Coentrao. Marca report the Portuguese left-back is set to be ushered out of Madrid in the summer and therefore the club are looking for a replacement.
It wouldn’t be a glamorous option for Madrid, but they’re not looking for a Galactico, just someone to provide support to Marcelo and cover in case of injuries. Yuri was with Tottenham from 2007 to 2010, eventually being released by Spurs.
Tottenham are strong at fullback under Mauricio Pochettino, so there’s no reason for them to consider taking Yuri back at any stage.
For Manchester City it’s different and Marca present them as competition, saying they’re ‘knocking on the door’ for Yuri and interested in signing him during the summer. Yuri has a €30m buyout clause, and it’s unlikely Madrid would want to pay that.
Signing the former Tottenham player wouldn’t be especially exciting for Manchester City either, but Pep Guardiola needs to refresh his whole fullback situation in the next window, and that will include squad options.
