Front page of today’s Mundo Deportivo states that Manchester City and Bayern Munich are ‘interested’ in Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.

Within the report, it’s said the midfielder is ‘one of the most sought-after players’ in the market and his sale this summer is ‘not ruled out’.

That’s because his exit can help the La Liga side raise funds and lighten their wage bill. In addition to this, his performances have not been consistent since he arrived at the Camp Nou in 2019.

Due to these factors, the 25-year-old ‘can become the key’ to raising funds to buy others. This includes Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski and Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva.

Lewandowski is putting the pressure on to get a move away from the Bavarian club, who are also ‘interested’ in the Netherlands international. If the Catalan club agree to sell De Jong to the Bundesliga winners, it would make it easier for them to sign the Polish striker.

De Jong could not only enter into a possible operation with Bayern for Lewandowski, but also with Manchester City for the Portugal international.

It’s claimed Pep Guardiola has been a ‘great admirer of the Dutchman’ and even tried signing him for the Premier League winners before he moved to Barca. The Citizens were again interested in the player in the January window.

Manchester City are of the belief the Dutchman has the qualities to succeed in the Premier League and are monitoring his situation.

Meanwhile, Xavi Hernández and his technical staff like Silva ‘the most’.

His deal lasts until 2025, and he won’t be available for cheap this summer, but neither would De Jong for the Etihad club. Mundo suggest the two clubs could ‘balance the operations even if they were not in a pure and simple exchange’.

Although Manchester City are interested in De Jong, this report feels like Mundo giving out possible ways how Barca can try to get a player in return for the Dutchman’s exit.
