Manchester City have become the latest club to be credited with interest in Athletic Club star Nico Williams.

The winger’s deal lasts until 2024 and on Tuesday, his agent revealed the La Liga side haven’t yet made an offer to his client. Later that day, Williams admitted he’s flattered with the interest he’s received from England and Spain.

Williams is on the front page of today’s AS, where it’s pointed out Real Madrid, Barcelona and ‘major Premier League sides’ are all interested in him. Within the report, it’s said several clubs are attentive of his situation and this includes Manchester City.

According to the newspaper, Los Blancos, Barca and the Premier League’s big four are all keen to sign the Spain international. The Catalan club’s delicate economic situation makes it impossible for them to join a potential bidding war.

Therefore, Barcelona are trying to convince Williams to join them, using Xavi Hernández’s project and also taking advantage of his friendship with Iñigo Martínez.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid wouldn’t have an issue paying his current release clause of €50m.

The Spanish giants will face competition from four English clubs, and only Manchester City and Liverpool are mentioned. It’s said Pep Guardiola’s side ‘are in the lead’ to acquire his services.

Despite interest from England, Williams’ desire is to continue in Spain and he favours a move to Real Madrid. Manchester City or another English club have to convince him if they are to stand a chance of securing his services.

Athletic, down their end, are trying to tie down the star to a new contract and increase his clause. AS say the most feasible option for them is to renew the deal without raising the clause.

Williams, for his part, doesn’t want to leave for free next summer. Therefore, AS add he has shown willingness to renew the deal, with the condition to not change the clause.

The player isn’t bothered about the speculation surrounding his future.

“These are things that are talked about, rumours. I am calm, focused on the national team and on Thursday’s game,” he told Marca.

Without an extension, Williams will be able to negotiate with other clubs from January 1st.

On this, he said: “Today I think about the national team, to improve my performance here and get the best. What has to happen will happen.”
