Pep Guardiola had to rely on Oleksandr Zinchenko for the left-back position as Benjamin Mendy has struggled at times at Manchester City this season.

The former Barcelona manager has even deployed right-back João Cancelo on the left side of the defence.

It won’t be a surprise if City were to look at signing a new left-back in the next market. They are linked with few players, including Sporting’s Nuno Mendes.

Last month, reports from Portugal explained the Premier League side made ‘exploratory contacts’ for the 18-year-old.

This is once again relayed in Record, who further add Guardiola’s side have joined Manchester United in the race for the fullback.

The newspaper also provides more information on what happened during the preliminary talks between the two parties. It’s claimed Manchester City ‘demonstrate intention’ to sign the Portugal international.

However, City plan to loan him back to the Primeira Liga side so that he can enjoy having more minutes and continue his development, especially given the trust he’s received from his manager, Rúben Amorim.

Record doesn’t mention whether or not Sporting are ready to accept City’s terms for signing Mendes.

Apart from the two Manchester clubs, Mendes is also attracting interest from Napoli, AC Milan, Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
