Manchester City were in ‘intensive discussions’ with Borussia Mönchengladbach defensive midfielder Denis Zakaria before their suspension from the Champions League earlier this year.
That’s according to Rheinische Post, who believe it is only logical that City will return for the player this summer given Pep Guardiola and Txiki Begiristain have been interested in the 23-year-old for some time.
They were keen to lure Zakaria to the Etihad in 2017 when he was leaving Young Boys, but he elected to head to Borussia instead.
However, his discussions with Manchester City were thought to be going well before they were called off and the newspaper believes that they have ‘good chances’ of signing him ‘should there be a transfer’.
Whether that can happen, though, will be dependant on Borussia’s willingness to do a deal, which at this moment in time seems unlikely.
The club’s Sporting Director Max Eberl has stated publicly that Zakaria will be playing with the German side next season and continuing his development there.
The player also has two years remaining on his deal at the club meaning they are in a position of strength should City come calling this summer.
