On February 7th, Sport reported Manchester City have Barcelona’s Pau Cubarsí on their radar.
Two days later, Mundo Deportivo stated the Citizens will come back for the defender, after having failed to sign him in the past. Their plan then was to send the 17-year-old on loan to Girona, to continue his development.
Thursday’s edition of Sport talks about Manchester City’s interest in signing the centre-back.
The Spain U17 international has made 12 appearances since making his first team debut earlier this year. He starred and bagged the man of the match award in the Champions League win over Napoli on Tuesday.
His deal lasts until 2026 and the report states it has a €10m release clause, which would be affordable for the likes of Manchester City. This has seen him arouse interest from Premier League sides, including the treble winners.
It’s claimed Pep Guardiola’s side have already carried out surveys for the Spaniard, but regulations in the UK won’t allow them to sign him until he’s 18 [next January]. Therefore, they could sign Cubarsí next year but Sport state it’ll be ‘very difficult’.
Manchester City would have to convince the player, who isn’t keen to leave Barcelona. He’s happy and only has succeeding at the club on his mind.
At the same time, the Catalan club have informed Cubarsí’s agent about their desire to offer him an improved deal.
Sport state the good relationship between the two parties shouldn’t make it difficult to reach an agreement, which may not please Guardiola’s side.
