Barcelona managed Xavi has sanctioned the sale of midfielder Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United after they made their first bid for him.

That’s according to journalist Jose Alvarez, who says Xavi ‘would accept’ the deal so he can reinforce his squad in other areas.

De Jong has been heavily linked with a move away from the Nou Camp for several weeks, with Barcelona desperately trying to raise funds and reduce their wage bill.

The Dutchman is one of the more saleable assets in the current squad, and there is firm interest in him from Manchester United.

They’re now managed by Erik ten Hag, who enjoys a superb relationship with the player after they worked together at Ajax.

It’s a relationship he’s keen to enjoy again, and it’s been made clear in reports in both Spain and England that he is pushing for Manchester United to get a deal done.

Indeed, Marca reported last night that United have now submitted their first offer to Barcelona, offering €60m + €20m in add-ons.

That offer was being ‘seriously’ studied by the Catalans, and it seems they are doing so with the blessing of their manager.

According to Alvarez, Xavi has ‘would accept’ the sale of De Jong in order to use the funds to strengthen his squad in other areas this summer.

That’s one problem out of the way for Manchester United, who now need to find the right price for Barca to accept and convince the player into moving to Old Trafford.
