Back in January, Idrissa Gana Gueye to Paris Saint Germain was a transfer rumour that simply wouldn’t go away.
The French side pushed hard for the Senegal midfielder but limited by FFP, couldn’t meet Everton’s asking price for him.
Gueye was apparently disappointed not to see it go through having fancied the move, and even spent deadline day in Paris in the hope something would happen at the last minute.
In the intervening months, there’s still been some talk about PSG reigniting their interest this summer. However, with Leonardo coming in as Sporting Director there was a sense the Ligue 1 side would change track.
Le Parisien have updated the story today, and that is indeed what has happened. They say that, after ‘getting rid’ of Financial Fair Play, PSG are now ready to spend this summer.
A defensive midfielder is top of their priorities, but Leonardo and manager Thomas Tuchel are looking at different players.
According to the newspaper, Tuchel ‘would still campaign’ for either the signing of Gueye or Julian Weigl. Leonardo, though, has his own ideas and is trying to find a player who satisfies both him and his manager.
Whether that is Gueye remains to be seen although, if Tuchel is keen, there’s every chance he’ll stay a backup option if Leonardo cannot get the man he wants.
