Despite promising Inter fans that he wouldn’t leave this summer following Antonio Conte’s departure, Romelu Lukaku did just that: leave.

Chelsea came knocking with their wallet wide open, and a €100m+ deal was struck between the two clubs that saw the Belgian transfer back to Stamford Bridge, a place he had left seven years ago.

It made a lot of people in Italy unhappy, but it also brought a lot of joy on these shores, where the player seems genuinely thrilled at the prospect of wearing Chelsea’s colours once again.

That is exactly why he was let go, according to Simone Inzaghi, Inter’s latest manager, as he explained the reasoning behind the sale of their top scorer.

He said, relayed by TuttoMercatoWeb“The departure of Lukaku was not budgeted. Myself, Marotta and Ausilio tried to convince him, but the boy was very sincere. I enjoyed him for a week during training and I understood why he has been so important in the past couple of years.

“He’s a splendid boy, of principles, and when he came, he told me that Chelsea was a dream of his, and the choice had been made. We tried to talk to each other for a day and a half, but there was nothing to do and we organised accordingly. Dzeko has arrived, another striker will arrive, but Lukaku’s was undoubtedly an unexpected loss”.

The Belgium international is now expected to be ready to feature against Arsenal at the weekend, and the new Chelsea striker will be hoping to finally find the back of the net for the London club, having never managed to do so when he featured for them in the past.

His record for the Blues, so far, stands at one assist in 15 professional games.
