Lamine Kone was a regular figure in Sunderland’s defence in the past two seasons, during which the Black Cats were relegated from the Premier League to League One.

Having started his career in the second division in France, the centre-back wanted a kickstart and therefore joined Strasbourg on a season-long loan deal with an option to sign him on a permanent deal next summer.

So far, he has made four appearances in the league, which includes a 2-1 victory over AS Monaco earlier this month. Le Racing have enjoyed a good start to this term and have improved their defence considerably, when compared with that of the previous campaign.

The Ivory Coast central defender’s current manager, Thierry Laurey gave an interview to French newspaper Le Télégramme, in which he explained why Strasbourg decided to bring the Sunderland player on a temporary spell.

“Simple, we recruited those who have much more experience, who know the Ligue 1 well. Lamine Koné, who played Lorient for a while in the past and also Sunderland,” Laurey said.

Kone spent over five years with Lorient and made over 100 appearances in Ligue 1 with his former club.
