Surprising everyone and delighting Chelsea fans on transfer deadline day, the London club decided to bring back David Luiz to Stamford Bridge for a second spell.
The former Benfica starlet, who was pushed to the bench by Unai Emery for the first few games of the season at Paris Saint-Germain, seemingly jumped at the opportunity and was on the first Eurostar to London when he heard of the offer.
At least, that’s what Unai Emery seemed to say when asked about the Brazilian’s transfer during a press conference ahead of the Ligue 1 champions’ clash against Saint-Etienne at the weekend.
He said, relayed by Calciomercato: “I wanted to keep David Luiz here. He told me he’d received a great offer from Chelsea and that he wanted to leave.”
So it appears that Paris Saint-Germain weren’t that keen to sell their defender after all, but when an offer giving them the chance to get most of their money back on a 30-year-old defender landed on their desk, you can understand why they took it.
And if David Luiz was promised a starting role under Antonio Conte, then he probably didn’t have to think twice about it.
