Arne Engels left FC Augsburg for Celtic in August of last year and impressed in his debut season under Brendan Rodgers.

Engels mainly operated in the middle of the pitch and at times as a defensive midfielder. From 51 games for Celtic, he managed 10 goals and 13 assists. His displays for the Scottish champions haven’t gone unnoticed in Italy.

That’s according to Sportitalia, who state Atalanta have identified the Celtic player as a target for the summer window.

Journalist Alfredo Pedullà mentions the 21-year-old when covering Gian Piero Gasperini’s future and La Dea’s plans for next season. He says the manager can sign a new contract, as long as receives ‘guarantees on the market’.

Gasperini is willing to let Atalanta sell Éderson and Ademola Lookman, provided they are adequately replaced. He has requested the Belgium international and Genoa’s Morten Frendrup for midfield.

Pedullà reports the Serie A club have already made concrete attempts to sign Engels and Frendrup. It’s unclear whether the Italian club will sign both or whether Celtic are open to selling the midfielder in the upcoming window.

Engels’ contract lasts until 2028 and he’s currently valued at €12m by Transfermarkt. Brendan Rodgers’ side could demand more than that if they were to sell the Belgian.
