Julen Lopetegui is set to make history at Sevilla after resisting the ‘lure’ of Tottenham when they came calling last summer.

That’s according to Diario de Sevilla, who cover the Sevilla boss today and how he is showing ‘offer-proof’ loyalty to the Spanish side.

They say that while Lopetegui is breaking records for the club, he is also ‘set to make history’ thanks to the commitment he is showing them.

It’s explained that while previous managers like Unai Emery have been lured away in the past, Lopetegui has ‘already said no’ to an offer from abroad.

That came from Tottenham in the summer, when they were looking for Jose Mourinho’s replacement and targeted the Spaniard when Antonio Conte, who later accepted the offer, initially rejected them.

Lopetegui has spoken of the offer they made in the past and done so again, admitting to Cadena Ser that “there have been moments this summer when there was something, but we decided to stay.”

Unlike his predecessors, though, he has been ‘seduced’ by Sevilla, and if he were to fulfil his contract, which is set to run until the end of next season, he will become the ‘second longest-serving’ coach in the current century behind Joaquín Caparrós.

He managed Sevilla for five full seasons from 2000-01 to 2004-05, and Lopetegui is in line to get close to that should he continue as he is.

He’s doing so in fine form, too, with the Basque coach ‘surpassing himself’ with every season in terms of results. This season they’ve already accumulated 54 points, three less than at the same stage last year, in which the tally of 77 was the best in the club’s history.

The hope is that he can take Sevilla one step further again and add further evidence to the argument that rejecting Tottenham’s advances was very much the right thing to do.
