Chelsea youngster David Datro Fofana “can become a very great player” after he finally managed to break through at FC Union Berlin.
That’s according to coach Nenad Bjelica, who has helped the striker to finally make his mark after a disappointing campaign in Germany so far.
Fofana joined Berlin on loan in the summer in search of regular playing time and development away from Chelsea, where it was decided there was no place for him for the time being.
The move has ended up being something of a disaster, though, as he fell foul of the previous manager and couldn’t get into the squad under him or his replacement, Bjelica.
His performances when given a chance didn’t warrant more either, with him going 25 shots on goal without scoring and establishing himself as the ‘most unsuccessful shooter’ in the Bundesliga until Wednesday evening.
That saw him finally score his first goal in the league, bagging the second in the 2-0 win over Cologne after coming off of the bench.
The hope is that could be the ‘breakthrough’ he’s been looking for and Bjelica certainly believes the Chelsea man can kick on, under one condition.
“We know that he has talent and quality, but he still has to work hard. If he understands that, he can become a very great player,” he said on the loanee.
Bjelica will of course be referring to the issues that have followed Fofana this season, with BILD explaining that his struggles so far have been down to ‘disciplinary reasons’ and the fact that Fofana is said ‘not to have always taken punctuality so seriously’.
Those are negative traits he needs to overcome if he’s to flourish, with this goal perhaps the starting point for something better moving forwards.
