Last week, we all saw the little controversy that Chile manager Ricardo Gareca created when leaving Sheffield United player Ben Brereton Díaz out of the squad.
The coach claimed that it wasn’t only a technical decision, as the player, who was born in Stoke-on-Trent, was told that he should learn Spanish to increase his chances of getting called-up.
Well, as Sheffield United now announced that Brereton Díaz is joining the national team, even the Chilean media received the news with some surprise, as reported by La Tercera.
Instead of showing La Roja’s official announcement saying the striker was called up, they make it sound like it was the Blades who were the first to announce the call-up.
It now remains to be seen whether Gareca chose not to announce it in case he doesn’t want too much noise around the situation, especially following his recent statements.
Brereton Díaz is only getting called up because Chile are having several injury issues, having lost four players since their official call up.
Now as the Sheffield United player tries to show Gareca he deserves a place in the squad, he might want to spend a bit more time on his Spanish Duolingo before the Copa América.
