Newcastle United’s Fabian Schar announced his retirement from international duty with Switzerland this summer, following his involvement for the country at Euro 2024.
That doesn’t mean he’s slowing his career down generally, and he’ll remain a key option for the Magpies and manager Eddie Howe.
The expectation seems to be that he will return to the first-team fray after serving his suspension, and Switzerland dearly wish he was returning for them too.
Neue Zürcher Zeitung report Yakin is now considering flying to Newcastle to speak to Schar. He wants to have a dialogue with the Magpies man about coming out of international retirement.
The candidates to potentially replace the experienced centre-back aren’t thought to be good enough to feature regularly for Switzerland and that is why Yakin wants Schar back.
The manager’s communication skills have been described as a key reason why Schar decided to retire from international duty. Things could now change, depending on what the 32-year-old wants.
