UD Las Palmas manager Quique Setién has confirmed that the club is in advanced talks to sign the West Ham striker Jonathan Clalleri.

In a press conference today, the boss talked about the “good acquisitions” the club are making during the January window.

When specifically talking about Calleri, Setién referred to him as “very interesting” and “wanted by many clubs” (via Estádio Deportivo).

Earlier today, we’ve covered reports from the Spanish press which considered the deal as done, saying the move should be closed in the next few days.

But according to the Brazilian media, Calleri’s staff are still looking for a better destination for the player. It wouldn’t be his desire to join Las Palmas, and if they don’t find him a better club, a return to Brazilian side São Paulo would be more likely.

Calleri belongs to Maldonado, a club used by agents to make profit by selling players. The striker was signed from Boca Juniors for €10m, and they won’t give up until they transfer him for a much bigger amount.

It seems the player and his owners disagree on where next after West Ham. This all sounds like something FIFA may well be interested in.
