Julian Nagelsmann has been backed to succeed at Tottenham should they move for him, with the job a good one for him after his time at Bayern Munich.
That’s according to Didi Hamann, who believes the German coach is very likely to end up in the Premier League after leaving Bayern.
Nagelsmann was sacked by the German champions last week in a move that caught pretty much everyone by surprise given Bayern were still in the title race and competing in the latter stages of the Champions League.
The decision to remove him from his position appears to have been made because of the availability of Thomas Tuchel, who remained out of work after leaving Chelsea in September.
He was quickly installed at Bayern as Nagelsmann’s replacement, with the latter now left looking for his next job.
He’s quickly been linked with Tottenham, who have a long-standing interest in him and are searching for their next manager after parting ways with Antonio Conte.
As far as Hamann is concerned a move to Tottenham is one Nagelsmann could make, with it a suitable one for him after his disappointing departure from Bayern.
“I think it’s very likely that the next step is to go abroad,” he told Sky Sports Germany.
“Whether it’s England or another country. England is the league where coaches want to go because that’s where the most money is at the moment. They play very good football there and I think Tottenham is a club where you could do worse.
“It’s difficult to win a title there, but you’re always within striking distance of the Champions League. And of course you have a good chance to be champions there. Of course you have to beat Arsenal and Liverpool and City and United and all of them
“It’s going to be difficult, but I think it wouldn’t be the worst choice for him as a next step, I think. (…) Of course, that didn’t help him now, the way the exit was done.
“I could imagine that there is a big market for him in England because he is one of the most interesting young coaches.
“I think he learned a lot in Munich. That’s why I think if he comes to the Premier League club, he will come there as a better coach than he was in Munich.
“I do believe that the next step will now be abroad. Because once you’ve been at Bayern, once you’ve won titles, then of course you want to take the next step and that’s why I think he’ll go to England. And I could well imagine that with Tottenham could, I think, fit quite well.”
