Manchester United’s Memphis Depay wasn’t originally called up for Danny Blind’s latest Netherlands squad. The former PSV star has seen his status fall since moving to Old Trafford and at times it’s seemed he’s on a slippery slope which will ultimately lead to the exit door.

Louis van Gaal showed faith in taking Depay to the Brazil World Cup, and underlined that by signing him for Manchester United a year later. A few bad games, and an awful lot of criticism from the Dutch and English media, and Depay’s confidence ended up shot.

Since then things haven’t really improved and when given chances, more often than not, Depay has faltered, at times looking like nothing could go right for him.

Given the chance of a Netherlands call-up thanks to injuries, Depay is ready to take that opportunity and speaking to MetroNieuws it’s been perceived he’s sent a dig the way of Van Gaal.

The newspaper quote Depay as saying: “The training sessions are going well, I’m sharp and fit. But that applies to everyone. The level has become higher. Jose Mourinho is a top coach.”

It’s pointed out that Depay is getting even less minutes under Mourinho, and then he’s quoted as saying: “The feeling is different. Mourinho has expressed his confidence in me. Personally, but also in the press.”

MetroNieuws reckon it seems like a ‘sneer’ towards Van Gaal and say he won’t reveal what went wrong with his former manager, then quoting the Manchester United player as saying: “I’d rather not talk about last season. It happened.”

Depay did accept that he should have played better during the last campaign, and he’ll hope he’s not saying the same a year from now.
