If there’s one thing the Porto sections of Portuguese sport newspapers love covering right now it’s Eder Militao, what a bargain he was from Sao Paulo, and how much the club could get for him with a transfer next summer.

The Boxing Day edition of Record describes Manchester United as a ‘shark’ circling to make the signing. Barcelona are also credited with interest, but with the Catalan club already signing Jeison Murillo ahead of the January window, and eyeing Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt for next summer, that interest sounds shaky.

Even Old Trafford interest can be questioned. Whilst it’s no surprise that the club would be interested in such a breakthrough star, especially in central defence, and whilst it’s also true they scout Porto almost weekly, the country’s media had originally presented the whole thing as being driven by Jose Mourinho, and have now forgotten that.

Porto’s financial situation is better than in some recent seasons because of their progress in the Champions League, so they’re not in a position where a sale would be forced.

Record explain the player has a €50m buyout clause and ‘it’s a matter of honour’ for Porto to get as close to that figure as they can, if and when the time for an exit arrives.

‘Behind the scenes’ at Porto, sources say the club could get their biggest ever transfer income, with Militao’s exit potentially surpassing the €25m James Rodriguez deal.
