Manchester United want to ‘accelerate’ their efforts to sign Diogo Dalot to a new long-term deal at the club.
That’s according to O Jogo, who say the recent triggering of a one-year extension until 2024 was just the start of the club’s plans.
They explain that Manchester United ‘do not intend to stop there’ with the Portugal international and the aim is to add ‘five more years’ to his current contract.
The defender has ‘attracted interest’ across Europe with his performances this season and the Premier League side do not want to take any chances with him.
They recently activated a one-year option to extend his contract until 2024 but they don’t intend for that to be the last of it.
O Jogo have learned that a further extension to Dalot’s contract is a matter that Manchester United ‘want to accelerate’ in order to tie the defender to a long-term deal. That’s because the player is ‘unquestionable’ for Erik ten Hag, and they want to ‘ward off potential suitors’.
The intention is to offer a contract of at least five years beyond 2024 in order to ensure a ‘lasting commitment’ between the two parties.
At this point Dalot is focused on returning to competitive action after missing the win over Nottingham Forest with a muscle injury.
Securing a new deal is not on the list of ‘major concerns’ for the player, who has enjoyed a stellar 2022 in which he has established himself with Manchester United and Portugal.
