Much to the sadness of the vast majority of the Manchester United fanbase, David De Gea has yet to sign a new contract, edging ever closer to entering the final year of his Old Trafford contract next season.

This could lead the goalkeeper to eventually leave on a free, where a return to Spain could be on the cards.

Should this scenario take place, the Red Devils would need to replace their star player, and there are suggestions here and there they are monitoring potential targets.

According to Corriere dello Sport, one of them is (don’t be too shocked) Gianluigi Donnarumma, currently at Milan and still widely seen as one of the best young goalkeepers in the world.

The Italian newspaper explain Manchester United have been ‘keeping an eye’ on the 20-year-old ‘for some time’, as have Paris Saint-Germain, but neither club has, so far, ‘started true and proper negotiations’.

Donnarumma is seen as one of Milan’s more important assets (valued between €50-60m), one that would allow them to fill their coffers easily should FFP require them to do so, and with a couple of big clubs potentially needing a new goalkeeper at some point in the near future, suitors shouldn’t be too hard to come by.

There’s nothing much to this just now, and should Manchester United manage to enjoy a good season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during the 2019-20 campaign, there’s every chance David De Gea puts pen to paper to a new deal.

If he doesn’t, however, then Gianluigi Donnarumma could start to look very enticing.
