Reports of Manchester United interest in PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo have increased after he starred for the Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup.

On Wednesday, Foot Mercato explained the forward is the priority target for Erik ten Hag in the winter market.

Later that day, the 23-year-old insisted he has not heard from Manchester United but will consider it if they were to make an approach for him. This came a month after the Dutchman admitted it would be an honour for him to join the Premier League side.

Gakpo has three goals from four matches in Qatar. He has also impressed for PSV this season, managing 13 goals and 17 assists from 24 matches this season.

The attacker’s displays have seen him attract attention from top European clubs. Voetbal International journalist Marco Timmer has detailed why Manchester United, who looked at the player in the summer, are ahead of others in the race to sign Gakpo.

“His entourage have held talks with most of the big European clubs over the last two seasons. They want to know what the plans are with Cody,” Timmer told Bernabéu Digital.

“Last summer, Manchester United wanted him and until the last market week he thought he would play for United. Afterwards, Leeds United and Southampton were very serious, but Gakpo wanted to stay at PSV.

“For the winter transfer window, his agents will talk after the World Cup with bigger clubs like Manchester United again, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich, for example. Manchester United seem to have a slight advantage in my opinion. Manager Erik ten Hag has the same agency as Gakpo and I think he needs a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.”
