Just when we thought the mysteries surrounding Faouzi Ghoulam’s release clauses had been solved, Corriere dello Sport come along and throw us a curveball.

Ever since the Algeria international signed his new deal with Napoli, every newspaper in Italy appeared to agree the left-back had a variable release clause only applicable to non-Serie A clubs, with the amount changing depending on who came knocking and how well the Italian side were doing at the time.

That meant the likes of Manchester United or Chelsea would probably have to pay more than, say, Everton, and the fee would have been lower had Maurizio Sarri failed to get his team into next season’s Champions League.

However, Corriere dello Sport on Thursday report the release clause amount will change on a certain date rather than depending on the interested club and Napoli’s success.

The Italian newspaper make it very clear the Napoli defender is still being followed by Manchester United, who have been a fan of his for a very long time, and if they make a bid before June 30th, they can get him for €38m.

After that date, the clause rises to €48m.

Considering Ghoulam has suffered two big injuries this season, first rupturing his knee ligaments in the Champions League clash against Manchester City before fracturing his kneecap following his return to training, it would make sense for José Mourinho and co. to, if they really want him, get him for €38m rather than €48m.

Of course, there’s a certain Jorge Mendes, who represents both the Manchester United manager and the defender, who could help in all this.

As for Ghoulam, there’s hope he’ll be able to feature in some shape or form at the weekend for Napoli’s last couple of games of the season, most likely coming off the bench.
