Leroy Sane’s contract at Manchester City runs until 2021 and despite having two years left on his current deal, his employer is trying to tie him down to a new one.

Pep Guardiola saw his men register a crushing 6-0 win over Watford in the FA Cup final and in the pre-match press conference, the manager stressed the English champions have been persuading the winger for more than a year to commit his future at the Etihad.

So far, the Germany international has not signed an extension and has failed to play the full 90 minutes since start of March, against Cardiff City. The 23-year-old has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich in recent weeks.

Sane’s teammate and compatriot Ilkay Gundogan gave an interview to SportBild and was asked about the former Schalke man’s situation at City.

The midfielder said, “If players do not play one or another time, it has now become a normal fact that there are automatic rumours.

“As our coach has already said, the club wants [to keep] Leroy. I know Leroy very well and know that he can prevail anywhere.

“But Leroy has to comment on his plans for the future when he does so, so I will not be distributing any public advice.”

Gundogan’s contract at City will expire in 2020 and the midfielder hasn’t yet committed his own future . SportBild says his exit from the club remains extremely unlikely at this point of time.

Later in the chat, when asked for his special moment with Guardiola, he said: “There are many different moments from the current season, but I will definitely never forget one thing, even if it’s a bit dated: When I injured my knee in 2016, I thought, ‘That’s it now with my transfer to Manchester City’!”

“But Pep had phoned me a day later and told me he wanted to keep me going. Of course, that was very nice.”

The German media have long thought it unlikely Gundogan will leave, and the same edition of SportBild this week suggests Sane would be too expensive for Bayern Munich.
