Promised to Wolfsburg then RB Leipzig, Breel Embolo’s future has been a hot topic of discussion over the past few months, and now that he’s at the Euros on the big stage, it’s only gone an intensified.

Manchester United’s reported interest appears to have scuppered a move to the aforementioned clubs for the player, but if Blick in Switzerland are to be believed, another option might have opened up for the Swiss forward.

The Swiss newspaper posted an article on their website on Tuesday afternoon claiming they held the truth about the player’s future, and Schalke 04 are now very strong contenders to securing his services.

The reason behind this is Manchester City’s interest in Leroy Sané, with a fee of €50m being thrown around for the German prodigy as Pep Guardiola continues to try and revamp the Premier League club.

Were Sané to leave for England, Schalke would need to replace him, and that’s where Breel Embolo comes in.

Flush with money from their sale to City, the German club would be able to compete, at least on the transfer fee level, with Manchester United, which could make Basel think twice about sending their talent to José Mourinho.

Then again, we all know who would win in a wages battle if that’s what it came down to.

Blick say that, for the time being, ‘the road to Gelsenkirchen (Schalke) is the hottest unless Manchester United muck things up with a super deal’.

More to follow, no doubt.
