Newcastle United missed out on winning their first domestic trophy in more than six decades as they suffered a 2-0 defeat against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

Casemiro put the Red Devils in front in the 33rd minute and Marcus Rashford’s deflected shot helped Manchester United double their lead six minutes later.

Alexander Isak came on after the break but Newcastle’s last summer signing or his teammates were unable to find the back of the net at Wembley, allowing Erik ten Hag’s side to seal a comfortable win in the end.

The EFL Cup success saw Manchester United win their first trophy in close to six years.

Viaplay had a chat with Isak, where he gave his views on Newcastle’s defeat on Sunday.

“It’s probably the goals [which were missing for Newcastle]. I think we started well in terms of play, but we conceded goals on set pieces and finals like this are often decided on set pieces, so you have to be extra careful there and then we had an uphill battle for the second half,” he said, as quoted by Fotboll Skanalen.

“In terms of play, I think we were perhaps even better at the beginning, but it is a final and then it is the details that decide and today the first goal, which was in a set situation, decided it.”

Newcastle’s last domestic success came in 1955, when they beat West Bromwich Albion to win the FA Cup.

The Sweden international is disappointed with yesterday’s defeat, also because he and the Magpies weren’t able to please the large number of Newcastle supporters who turned up in London.

“That makes it extra sour. If you look here in the city the last day, there are an incredible number of supporters who went, even without tickets, so it stings extra that we couldn’t give them a title today,” Isak explained.

“But I feel like we have something interesting going on, and this is just the beginning. It is important for us to continue on the path we have taken.”
