Ajax are facing a major problem if Arsenal pull off a deal for defender Jurriën Timber this summer, with any transfer a “major loss” for the club.
That’s according to journalist Johan Inan, who says the Dutch star will be sorely missed by Ajax, despite some of the club’s fans believing he won’t be.
Timber has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal throughout this week, with several reports in the Netherlands making it clear that they’re closing in on a deal.
A report on the 20th made it clear that the defender had already reached an agreement with the Gunners following a meeting in London with the player and his agent.
That was followed by a claim that the player had set his sights on a move to the Emirates and was only interested in a transfer to Arsenal at this moment in time.
Should Timber depart he will be the latest in a long line of big players to leave Ajax in the last few years and Inan admits this one will be a major loss if it goes through as expected.
“There are some cynical supporters who are not sorry about it, but if you analyse it all carefully, you will see that this is really going to be a major loss for Ajax,” he said.
“He has the Ajax DNA, which Mislintat finds very important, and in Ajax’s defence he was the only one who was very comfortable on the ball last season.
‘If Timber leaves, it seems to be a second gap year for Ajax, because Mislintat will have to replace a lot of players.
“It is going to be a big job to get quality, leadership, club DNA in the selection and football ability in the rear. Those wishes are all there, but he still has to guarantee it.”
