It’s no secret that South American players who live in Europe often dream of playing for their favourite clubs in their home countries.
That’s no different with Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz, who previously belonged to Vasco da Gama and plans a comeback there.
The 25-year-old was this week interviewed by TNT Sports (via ESPN Brasil), and shared all the ideas he has about his return to Brazil.
Douglas Luiz still doesn’t have a date set to leave Aston Villa, but in a few years, he knows he’ll be signing for Vasco once again.
“Vasco is everything to me. It’s where I started, where it gave me a structure to be able to show the football I have today, the friends I take with me in my life, gratitude for the club. Vasco is everything. I hope that one day it ends there too. Where it all began, may it end there too,” Douglas Luiz told TNT Sports.
“My ideal plan would be to make my life in Europe, manage to win all the titles I want and return to Vasco. That is my main goal. I don’t think about returning to another club, no. I want to be able to reciprocate. I only played for one year at Vasco, the gratitude I have is so great, that I don’t want to get here at the age of 35, already dead, I can’t even run, sprint. So I want to be able to give back a little.”
Douglas Luiz comes from Vasco’s academy, and in 2017, Manchester City signed him for €12m.
Pep Guardiola’s side had problems to register him in the Premier League, and with the lack of a work permit, he was loaned to Girona for two consecutive seasons.
It was in 2019 that Aston Villa saw the opportunity and ended up signing him on a €16.8m deal. The investment soon paid off, and the midfielder is currently valued by Transfermarkt at €40m.
