Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson has told Bold that he’s pleased with Hákon Valdimarsson’s decision to leave Swedish side IF Elfsborg for Brentford in the winter market.
The Premier League side’s decision to bet on the Iceland international has had a direct impact on Rúnarsson.
Valdimarsson had received interest from FC Copenhagen before completing a move to Brentford. The 22-year-old picked the Bees and this saw the Danish club signing Rúnarsson on a free transfer on deadline day.
The former Arsenal man isn’t bothered that Copenhagen looked at his compatriot prior to acquiring his signature.
“It makes sense for them to chase such a great talent. He’s a fantastic goalkeeper and I think he made a very wise choice in going to Brentford,” he said.
“But it doesn’t surprise me that FCK, who are such a big club now, are also chasing the biggest talents. The fact that he ended up at Brentford just says that FCK are also doing something right.”
“It might well affect other players, but in the end, it was my deal that came through.”
Copenhagen sporting director Peter Christiansen has refused to back up the 28-year-old Icelandic stopper’s suggestion that the Danish club showed interest in the new Brentford signing last month.
“I can’t comment on players who aren’t ours or who are on our lists. I don’t know how many targets [players] we look through, but it’s a hell of a lot over the course of six months,” Christiansen explained.
Valdimarsson arrives at the London club, after keeping 14 clean sheets and conceding 22 goals from 29 league games for Elfsborg last year. The goalkeeper, who has signed a deal until 2028, is yet to make his debut for Brentford.
Mark Flekken has been the first-choice stopper for Brentford manager Thomas Frank this season, with Thomas Strakosha providing cover and competition.
